Pō Mākole
composed by Barbara Dempsey
This is the second version of the song I wrote - "Night Rainbow" called “Pō Mākole” . It's a love song born from the quiet magic of Moloka‘i — a place where the winds of Kamalō carry stories, and the ocean holds memories in its tide. In Hawaiian, pō mākole means “night rainbow,” a rare and gentle omen that appears only in the softest moonlight.
This song is about that kind of love — the love you feel not just with your eyes, but with your whole heart. A love that guides you home, even in the darkest night. As the colors of the unseen world shine around us, this mele reminds us that some connections are timeless, carried by spirit, by place, and by the ones we hold dear
Pō Mākole
Verse 1
Hāliu ka makani o Kamalō,
Softly calling through the night.
Ke ‘ala o nā pua, e honi mai,
Your scent drifts in the moonlight.
Chorus
Pō Mākole, e ku‘u lei aloha,
Night Rainbow, my beloved garland
Colors of love that only we see.
When shadows fall, your light remains,
You are the rainbow inside of me.
Verse 2
Moloka‘i ‘āina momona,
Land that feeds the soul and sea.
Kukui glows upon your brow,
Guiding my dreams back home to thee.
Chorus
Pō Mākole, e ku‘u lei aloha, (Night Rainbow, my beloved lei)
Love that shines where spirits be.
When time grows still, and stars grow cold,
You are the fire that carries me.
Bridge (Hawaiian)
E huli hoʻi au i kou aloha,
(I return again to your love)
I ka maluhia o ke kai,
(In the peace of the sea)
He ʻike i ka pō, he ao i loko,
(There is light within the night)
He aloha mau loa, no kāua ē.
(An endless love for us two)
Final Chorus
Pō Mākole, our hearts align,
Two souls shining beyond all time.
In the light unseen, we’ll always be,
Love of the ages — eternally.
Outro
Nā pali o Moloka‘i echo the sea…
